Current job title:
University of Malta
I consider myself an activist, a social worker and an academic. My interest in body image/appearance stems all three self-labels. My areas of activism, practice, research and teaching include significantly gender equality, and it is from this perspective that I approach the issue of appearance/body image. I have been active in various local, EU and Council of Europe fora in relation to different aspects of gender equality, as well as equality and inclusion in a wider sense.
Reason for joining:
To be able to link with other like-minded scholars and activists. To explore what is happening elsewhere in Europe on this issue.
Current research interest in relation to the COST Action:
‘Looksism’ or the ‘the standardization of a look (body image) and the discrimination against those who do not meet or conform to the prescribed image’ tends to affect women more as ‘the-looked-at-sex’. This causes distress in the majority of ‘normal’ every-day women who do not ‘fit’ the prescribed ‘look’, resulting in feelings of lack of control and ownership of our own bodies.
